Henkel Art.Award.: 5 Finalists Selected for 2011

An international jury of art experts led by Karola Kraus, Director of the Museum of Modern Art Stiftung Ludwig Vienna (MUMOK), has nominated five young artists from Latvia, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, and Ukraine as the finalists for the Henkel Art.Award. 2011, choosing from 870 submitted entries. The award features a monetary prize amounting to 7,000 euros, along with an exhibition in the artist’s native country as well as a solo presentation at MUMOK in Vienna. The winner will be honored at a gala award ceremony held at MUMOK on the evening of November 9, 2011.

Since 2002, Henkel CEE has been cooperating with KulturKontakt Austria to hold its Henkel Art.Award prize competition, which invites entries from creative artists in Central and Eastern European countries. In 2009, this cooperation was expanded to include the Viennese MUMOK, which will now offer the winner a solo presentation of his or her works of art at the museum.

In addition to the jury chairwoman Karola Kraus who serves as Director of MUMOK, the international jury of experts included Lukasz Ronduda, author and curator of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Poland and Zdenka Badovinac, Director of the gallery “Moderna Galerija“, Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia, recently convened in Vienna. They selected five nominees as the finalists to win the Henkel Art.Award. 2011 from the 870 entries which were submitted “On balance, this year’s entries for the Henkel Art.Award. reached a very high artistic level due to the concentrated pre-selection process in the countries. The depth of interdisciplinary approaches and works of art with a socio-political and institutional-analytical orientation conveying a lively picture of the motives and interests of the young scene in Eastern Europe were very impressive. The works of the five nominated finalists reflect these current developments, but each featuring the content-related aspects of their particular countries”, says Karola Kraus, Director of MUMOK und jury chairwoman for the Henkel Art.Award.
Among the young artists who have the opportunity to win the prize money of 7,000 euros along with an individual exhibition both in the artist’s native country and at the modern art museum MUMOK in Vienna are Kriss Salmanis (Latvia), Cristina David (Romania), David Ter-Oganyan (Russia), Istvan Ist Huzjan (Slovenia) and the artists group Yuriy Kruchak & Yulia Kostereva (Ukraine).

The Henkel Art.Award. will be bestowed upon the winner at a gala award ceremony to be held at MUMOK on November 9, 2011.
